The satellite city of New Cairo was built in the last twenty years to limit the growth of the Egyptian capital with the aim of hosting over six million inhabitants. The construction of the various districts was entirely contracted out to large private companies. The widespread presence of exclusive services such as golf courses and malls and the high housing prices created a new city unaffordable to the lower middle classes of the country.
